Portrait of a School

Affaf, front, and Hamada bustle about inside the school. Most men in Luxor smoke cigarettes and Hamada is no exception. I’ve seen him go through five in an hour when he was stressed out. Affaf doesn’t allow cigarettes in the school, but makes exceptions when there are no students present or expected and when your name’s Hamada.

Pictured is the middle of three classrooms at Ahlan. We call it the tomb.

I have 31 hours of classes this week, and allow the older teachers (of which we have six or seven) to teach in the air conditioned room. So I’ve been spending a lot of time in the tomb.
