The School’s Entryway

This is where I go to school six days a week — through the gate behind the chain-hookah-smokers. I don’t know if these men have jobs, but I can’t imagine how else they’d afford to puff on hookah for four+ hours a day. They typically give me looks resembling the man on the left. Sometimes we say “salam” — “peace” — the common greeting here.

  1. With a 13.4% unemployment rate (discounting the fact that this statistic doesn’t include those not actively looking for work), it is likely that this pastime is their only JOB.
